Malaysia’s world champions Tang Jie-Ee Wei withdraw from Hong Kong Open

NEWLY-CROWNED mixed doubles world champions Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei will not participate in the upcoming Hong Kong Open Badminton Championships from September 9 to 14.

National mixed doubles head coach Nova Widianto confirmed the decision was made after assessing the pair’s physical and mental condition following their historic victory at the BWF World Championships in Paris.

“We decided not to enter them for the Hong Kong Open after they informed us about Ee Wei’s current physical state,“ he told reporters during a training session at Akademi Badminton Malaysia in Bukit Kiara.

Nova explained that fatigue from their world championship campaign prompted the withdrawal, with the coaching staff opting to prioritise their recovery for future tournaments.

The pair will now focus their preparations on the China Masters scheduled for September 16 to 21, which begins just two days after the Hong Kong Open concludes.

Having secured qualification for the BWF World Tour Finals by winning the world championship title, Tang Jie and Ee Wei will now primarily compete in Super 750 and Super 1000 level tournaments. – Bernama
